Optimal categorisation

چکیده

The debate as to whether language influences cognition has been long standing but yielded conflicting findings across domains such colour and kinship categories. Fewer studies have investigated systems nominal classification (gender, classifiers) different languages examine the effects of linguistic categorisation on cognition. Effective needs be informative maximise communicative efficiency also simple minimise cognitive load. It therefore seems plausible suggest that implications for way speakers conceptualise relevant entities. A suite seven experiments was designed test this; here we focus our card sorting experiment, which contains two sub-tasks — a free sort structured sort. Participants were 119 adults six Oceanic from Vanuatu New Caledonia, with classifier inventories ranging 23. results experiment reveal classifiers appear provide structure in tasks where they are explicit salient. task did not incite through classifiers, arguably it required subjective judgement, rather than instruction. This evident quantitative qualitative analyses. Furthermore, employing more extreme displayed smaller variation comparison moderate systems. Thus, or rigid efficient. study implies influence may vary languages, all employ this optimal trade-off between simplicity informativeness. These novel data new perspective origin nature classification.

Prosodic Categorisation

The structural elements of the prosodic hierarchy and the ways in which phonological generalisations make reference to them are investigated. Assuming, as argued, that these elements constitute a universal set of primitives, the different types (categories) of such elements, especially the syllable, are examined more closely. Specifically, the traditional weight dichotomy of ‘heavy’ vs. ‘light’...

Categorisation by Context

Assistance in retrieving of documents on the World Wide Web is provided either by search engines, through keyword based queries, or by catalogues, which organise documents into hierarchical collections. Maintaining catalogues manually is becoming increasingly difficult due to the sheer amount of material, and therefore it will be necessary to resort to techniques for automatic classification of...

Categorisation of Norms

In a lot of existing legal knowledge based applications, the underlying legal model does not retain isomorphism with the original legal text. Parts of the text have not been modelled, and other parts have been simplified to single if-thenelse clauses. This makes these models difficult to validate, maintain and re-use. In this article we propose to make an intermediate model, in which the origin...

Fast & Confident Probabilistic Categorisation

We describe NRC’s submission to the Anomaly Detection/Text Mining competition organised at the Text Mining Workshop 2007. This submission relies on a straightforward implementation of the probabilistic categoriser described in [4]. This categoriser is adapted to handle multiple labelling and a piecewise-linear confidence estimation layer is added to provide an estimate of the labelling confiden...
